NATIONAL ART HONOR SOCIETIES
http://www.naea-reston.org/nahs.html
For your convenience the following information has been copied from the NAEA website. In the future, news from the local Delaware chapters will be added. More schools from Delaware should take part in these wonderful programs.
In 1978, the NAEA began the NAHS program specifically for high school student
grades 10-12, for the purpose of inspiring and recognizing those students who have
shown an outstanding ability in art. The NAHS also strives to aid members in working
toward the attainment of their highest potential in art areas, and to bring art education
to the attention of the school and community.
In 1989, the NAEA introduced the NJAHS as a separate organization from the
NAHS. (When a student completes the junior membership, he/she must start anew
and be nominated to the NAHS). This program, specifically for students in grades 7-9,
was designed to help generate interest in art programs at the secondary levels,
and to inspire and recognize the younger art student. The NJAHS students will become
members of a distinguished group of art students.
Some reasons why your school should join the NAHS/NJAHS:
1. You become part of a professional organization: The National Art
Education Association.
2. Your students become members of a distinguished group of approximately 21,000 art students.
3. Your NAHS sponsor, as an NAEA member, would be eligible for four grant programs.
4. Your NAHS students would be eligible for the Secondary Art Achievement Award.
5. An NAHS Senior would be eligible to receive the Charles M. Robertson Memorial Scholarship - a special four-year scholarship to Pratt's School of Art and Design in New York.
6. Your school art program would be eligible to apply for the NAEA Standards Award.
7. Your NAHS/NJAHS sponsor would be eligible to attend NAEA's annual convention, co-sponsored academies and institutes held throughout the country. They would also receive a variety of professional publications that could be a valuable resource in the classroom as well as to your professional library.
8. NAHS News is published twice a year and is received by students as well as sponsors. We encourage students to submit articles and art- work for publication in the News.
9. Participation in the NAHS/NJAHS, is a mark of accomplishment in the school and community and well recognized by the institutions when your students apply for entry into a college or university.
These programs recognize student excellence and achievement in art.

SCHOLARSHIP FUND
The Art Educators of Delaware Scholarship Fund, Inc. is a new effort of AED. It is a separate but related 501c3 tax- exempt organization. Therefore, this organization is able to raise and solicit tax-exempt funds. Our most popular fundraiser has been the fine arts raffle held last year. A new raffle is planned for the coming year. The AED Scholarship Fund is an endowment fund. Money in this fund is invested to provide an endowment that is an ongoing source of scholarship funds. Please contact the AED
Scholarship Fund representative if you wish to learn more about the Scholarship Fund or assist us with our effort.
DELAWARE REGIONAL SCHOLASTIC ART AWARDS
Every year the art teachers of Delaware may submit the best of their student artwork to the
Delaware Regional Scholastic Art Award Exhibition. This is the regional affiliate of the National Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. There are two groupings, senior high school and middle school. In the fall, art teachers receive information concerning the categories, size, submission date, fees, and other necessary information. A highly qualified panel selects the winners based on a set rubric. The standardized rubric used to judge the artwork asks that the work always be original, creative, and well executed. Following the Awards many of the best pieces go on to the National Scholastic Exhibition competition.
You will be notified as to time and location of all exhibitions. When possible, there is an exhibition of all the art selected for the Delaware regional competition. Over the years students from Delaware have received many national awards. Entering the Scholastics competition gives you a great opportunity to gain recognition for your students and your art program. The Scholastic Awards Exhibition is held annually in January or February. Please check the AED Web site for dates, exhibition sites, and further information. If you have additional questions feel free to contact your AED Representative or member of the AED Board.
AED ANNUAL AWARDS BANQUET
The AED Awards Banquet is held every year shortly before our National Art Education Convention. The purpose is to meet in fellowship as members and to honor those who have made important contributions to art education toward the goals and teaching of visual art education. Over the years, many exemplary art educators, and supporters have been honored at these ceremonies. Please contact the AED President if you wish to nominate a candidate for an award.
At the banquet the Art Educator of the Year is acknowledged for his or her unique accomplishments. Several persons who are not educators, but who have also made contributions, are also honored for their service. The AED Annual Awards Banquet is alternately held at an upstate or downstate location. Please view the application form for this year's AED Banquet.
YOUTH ART MONTH
For the last fifteen years Youth Art Month has been celebrated with the jubilant School Flags Across the U.S. Flying High! The opening ceremony will be held in Postal Square in Washington, D.C. for the student designers and families along with their United States Congressmen. All Delaware students are always invited to participate in designing a flag. One design is selected and professionally constructed into a 3' X 5' flag. The flag will be given later to the school as a memento of the occasion. Simple designs are always very effective and all flags must bear the YAMS logo. The deadline for sending in flag designs is in the month of January. AED will inform you of the yearly deadlines. The flag event is a wonderful idea to celebrate Youth Art Month, however, feel free to organize you own Youth Art Month event for your school! You may also submit ideas for a statewide celebration to the AED board of directors by contacting the president or your representative.
